Thank you for your support of Chicago HOPES for Kids especially during these difficult times.
We are so excited to share that we are hosting our biggest summer program ever! We are providing in-person programs to seven shelter partners with nine different programs!
The health and safety of HOPES families, volunteers, and staff is our number one priority.
For this summer we have limited our capacity to three adults, one site coordinator, and two consistent volunteers. Primarily this role is filled by AmeriCorps members but at a few shelters we included past long term volunteers. Program is limited to seven children. To accommodate more children we have split shelters into two groups on different days of the week. We are wearing masks, staying six feet apart, and washing our hands a lot! We are so excited to be back with our students.
We are also continuing to provide essential items to shelter partners as requested and available.
We will continue to work closely with the shelters to understand their needs and provide assistance, recognizing that flexibility will be essential.
Stay well.

Chicago HOPES for Kids Black Lives Matter Statement
Dear Friends of Chicago HOPES for Kids,
We are saddened by the senseless murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many other Black lives lost to police brutality. Over 1,000 people are killed by police every year in America, and Black people are three times more likely to be killed than White people (The Obama Foundation, 2020). We stand with those protesting the systemic injustice that disproportionately affects Black communities and perpetuates violence in many forms, including unequal access to housing and education. As we know from our work at HOPES, students experiencing homelessness are overwhelmingly Black. In 2018, 81% of homeless students were Black, although they comprise only 36.6% of citywide enrollment (Chicago Coalition for the Homeless). Organizationally, we ground our work in trauma informed practices, and the call to address the source of serious racial trauma for our students is one we cannot ignore. Our collective response is imperative in the fight for justice for the Black community and we implore supporters of our work to channel our outrage toward actionable systemic change.
At Chicago HOPES for Kids, recent events have deepened our resolve to provide the highest quality educational resources and encouragement to children experiencing homelessness. We are committed to addressing the immediate needs of our students by sharing food resources and continuing our virtual educational program to support distance learning. We are calling on you to join us by self-educating, donating, and taking action. Please use the links provided to donate and/or learn from organizations in Chicago who are working to create systemic change, including: Black Lives Matter Chicago, the Chicago Community Bond Fund, and the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless Mutual Aid Fund. You can also donate to directly support our work at Chicago HOPES for Kids.
At Chicago HOPES for Kids, we believe that Black lives matter. We remain committed to working together to create the just and equitable society our students deserve.

Estimados Amigos de Chicago HOPES for Kids,
