McKinney Vento-Act Defines Homelessness as:

​“Individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence.”

This includes individuals who are:

• Doubled up
  
• In a motel, hotel, trailer park, camp ground
  
• Transitional or emergency shelter
  
• Car, park, public space, bus, train, substandard housing, or similar setting

What Are The Impacts of Homelessness?

What Does Student Homelessness Look Like In Chicago?

• Chicago Public Schools (CPS) reported serving 16,451 homeless students during the 2018-19 schools year
• 11%, or 1,834 students lived in shelters
• Chicago’s homeless students are overwhelmingly children of color, at 98.3%. While 81% of homeless students were black, they comprise only 36.6% of citywide enrollment.
