Program Update

Erica Walker, MA, LSW: Program Manager

Greetings, friends! Although Spring Semester concluded on May 2, there has still been a lot of activity in the month of May. Our field trip to the Lincoln Park Zoo on May 4 was our largest event ever, and a turnout of over 200 people made the evening truly special and memorable. For me personally, to see children and families I have come to know from all of our shelter sites having a great time with one another was deeply rewarding and satisfying. Thank you so much to our partners at Lincoln Park Zoo for the opportunity!

Since then we have had several other events, including a trip to Bitspace for our middle school students, and two Family Night events held at our Cornerstone and Primo Sangamon program sites. The Site Coordinators and AmeriCorps members celebrated the end of the semester with a trip to Pilsen, enjoying Mexican food, culture and each other’s company. There have also been parent workshops at several sites, supporting families with positive parenting and healthy eating.

At HOPES there is never a shortage of tasks to complete. Coordination, careful planning, communication and collaboration are all necessary to make things work smoothly. It takes many hands to accomplish great things. I want to take this opportunity to thank the AmeriCorps team here at HOPES, in particular Mel Whitehouse, Skye Thomas, Nora Laidman and Alex Kirchner for the extraordinary efforts they have each demonstrated over the last month to bring exciting, memorable events to the children and families in our program.  THANK YOU!

Summer program begins Monday, June 24. In the meantime, take care!
