Executive Director Report

We are already halfway through our spring semester of our after school program!  A big thank you to our dedicated staff and volunteers who have encouraged and supported so many of our students to succeed at school and feel great about what they can accomplish. We look forward to our students finishing their school year strong.

During the week of March 10th, Our HOPES AmeriCorps members completed two days of service during AmeriCorps Service Week at Su Casa Catholic Worker Soup Kitchen, known as Frieda’s Place, serving breakfast to families and helping to clean and organize the space.   By all reports, it was a great day and our AmeriCorps team enjoyed spending time with the families at Frieda’s Place.

I am excited to welcome two new Site Coordinators to the HOPES staff, Jamie Napenas and Sara Nagi.   Jamie is a sophomore at Loyola University Chicago majoring in Business/Accounting. She also works as a cook at Symphony of Evanston. She decided to join HOPES as a site coordinator because she wants to help in encouraging, educating and caring for children at a difficult time in their lives.  She is now a Site Coordinator at House of the Good Shepherd. Sara moved to Chicago four years ago from Seattle and is pursuing her Masters in Education from Loyola University. Sara is serving as a Site Coordinator at PRIMO Sangamon. We welcome both of them to the Chicago HOPES for Kids team!

Time flies and plans for our HOPES Summer Enrichment Program are already underway, so please consider volunteering this summer and reach out to Amelia Murphy, HOPES Volunteer Manager, with any questions.  We are excited to bring in new partners this summer to bring our children inspiring experiences in STEM, art, dance and community leadership. Summer is a great time for our students to build their literacy skills and grow their understanding of the world.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Chicago HOPES for Kids and your dedication to helping children experiencing homelessness reach their full potential.  Happy Spring!

Best,

Rita Kahn
