Executive Director Report

Dear Friends of Chicago HOPES for Kids,

It has been a very busy summer for HOPES. The summer started with our first ever Seeds of HOPE Gala at the Garfield Park Conservatory. Over 200 guests attended the event that featured a Rock Band, DJ Cassera, catering by Limelight, a silent auction, our guest host, Sabrina Santucci from NBC, and a welcome by our Board President, Tonya Rice, who was also the event chairperson.

Many thanks for the wonderful Gala goes to our Board members, our staff and AmeriCorps members who helped with the Gala, our guests, and our sponsors: The John and Bessie Feinberg Family Foundation and Sloma Real Estate. We hope this Gala becomes an annual event.

Our Summer Program is at 7 shelter sites. Programs are up and running at Apna Ghar, Cornerstone, SRHAC, Primo Homan, Primo Englewood, Su Casa and You Can Make It, and Ridgeland. HOPES is providing a 6 week program at each of the shelter sites focusing on Literacy and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). A few of our wonderful enrichment partners this summer are MODOS Dance Company, Harmony, Hopes & Healing, The Insight Project for Kids, Code Play Learn, Mad Science, Free Lunch Academy, The Poetry Foundation, and Next Wave STEM.   We want to thank them for providing fun and inspiring programming for our children this summer.

We are saddened to say “Good-Bye” and give a heartfelt thank you to Latoya Jones, a VISTA member who ended her year of service with us at the end of June. Latoya spent her year helping develop literacy curriculum for our children, especially for our third, fourth, and fifth grade students. She has been an integral part of our program and she will be missed. We wish her much success as she joins Chicago Cares.

I also want to thank all our volunteers this summer who are spending time with our children at our shelter sites. The work you are doing with the children will be reflected in their improved reading levels over the summer. Because of you, our children will be returning to school prepared for the 2018-2019 school year!

Have a safe and enjoyable summer,

Patricia Rivera
