Executive Director Report

Dear Friends of Chicago HOPES for Kids,

The month of March was a busy one for HOPES and for our children at the shelters.  Family Game nights continued at three of our shelters, Primo Center (second Sunday of each month), Cornerstone (second Saturday of each month), and SRHAC (third Sunday of each month). All three were well attended by families.

Our AmeriCorps members participated in AmeriCorps week by making breakfast for community members in the Back of the Yards neighborhood at Frieda’s Place.  Frieda Holley, now also a HOPES Site Coordinator at Su Casa, has been running a neighborhood soup kitchen that has provided food and companionship to all comers for the past 25 years. We salute Frieda and had a great time working with her!

The AmeriCorps Conference came to Chicago this year and members of the HOPES team participated in workshops, learning about volunteer recruitment and retention as well as financial management. Additionally, two new AmeriCorps members joined the HOPES team, Alexandra Galvan and Thelma Jackson, both will be serving at the Primo Center (Englewood) for the remainder of the semester.  Several of our AmeriCorps members and staff also participated in a six week Youth Development training sponsored by the Gary Comer Center. The training focused on strategies to improve our work with our children and youth.

March also brought Spring Break to HOPES. Staff and AmeriCorps members had a field day at the Lincoln Park Zoo and Lincoln Park Conservatory. The day gave us time to build relationships and learn about each other’s work at our diverse shelters.

We are now more than half way through our HOPES Spring Semester and are looking forward to a busy second half of the semester. This includes our Perspectives of Child Homelessness event (April 13th) and our Partnership Appreciation event (April 18th).

As we welcome Spring, I want to thank all of you for your support of HOPES – volunteering your time and talents to improve the lives of the children we serve.

Lastly, save the date for our first annual Seeds of HOPE Gala (June 22nd)! Tickets go on sale April 20th.

Sincerely,

Patricia Rivera
